Community Alliance for Re-entry and Employment Services
  lightbulb
Bright ideas are often unconventional

The Crime Prevention Institute (CPI) is a 501c3 non-profit dedicated to the successful reentry of incarcerated individuals. CPI organizes the Community Alliance for Re-entry and Employment Services (C.A.R.E.S.) Network whose mission is to connect previously incarcerated individuals with employers who understand the adverse socio-economic impacts of unemployment. These employers have committed themselves to partnering with CPI in an effort to reduce recidivism through employment.

The Cost of Incarceration

The cost of keeping an individual behind bars is currently $16,400 per year and expected to increase. Less money is being spent on preventative and rehabilitative programs that would provide people with access to services that would decrease recidivism and promote economic growth. In 2006, the Texas Department of Criminal Justice incarcerated 152,700 individuals on an annual budget of $2.5 billion. The current sponsorship cost for comprehensive case management and reentry services per CPI client is 90% less than incarceration not to mention the true cost to the community.

Getting Involved

By choosing to join the CPI C.A.R.E.S. Network your company agrees to interview at least four qualified CPI clients within the first 12 months of your membership. Referrals will come directly from CPI and will accompany a CPI client’s resume or application for employment. In addition, your company agrees to notify the CPI C.A.R.E.S. Network Program Coordinator via phone, fax, or e-mail of any available job openings at your company.

Benefits of Membership

With all employment referrals CPI will provide your company with the following benefits free of charge:

  • Access to qualified and skilled workers who are invested in helping your company grow
  • A letter signed by the client’s case manager stating that they are engaged in case management services and would be an excellent candidate for full or part-time employment
  • Eligibility for a Work Opportunity Tax Credit (Up to $2,400.00)
  • Access to state and federal bonding
  • A copy of each client’s criminal background history, obtained from the Texas Department of Public Safety
  • The knowledge that your company is part of a network dedicated to strengthening communities, families, and individuals through economic reinvestment in the Austin community
