Q: How
is the Crime Prevention Institute (CPI) funded?
A: CPI is a 501(c)3 non-profit organization funded
by local government contracts, foundation grants, fundraising
efforts and private donations.
Q: I have a meeting scheduled with CPI staff at the
CPI office. Is there anything I need to know before
entering the jail?
A: Yes. CPI follows the Texas Department of Criminal
Justice (TDCJ) Visitor Polices. Please review this list
of guidelines before entering the jail.
Q: I was recently released from jail/prison. Can
I be a CPI client?
A: CPI begins working with ALL clients before
they are released from jail/prison. Individuals must
apply for CPI programs while still incarcerated. Currently,
CPI programming is only available to those incarcerated
at the Travis State Jail in Austin, TX and the Hilltop
Unit in Gatesville, TX.

| When
released from jail, most CPI clients are without
family support or access to basic provisions such
as identification, clothes for job interviews
or housing. It can be difficult to feel confident
with these needs unmet. |

Q: I am not a CPI client. How can CPI help me?
A: CPI understands the barriers ex-offenders
face each day. CPI staff offer referrals and information
to offenders and ex-offenders through I-60s (in
prison communication)or over the phone post-release.
Referrals include; basic needs, transitional housing,
job placement assistance. Information and referral services
are open to any formerly incarcerated person.
Q: I have a felony background and cant find a
job. Does CPI have a list of employers willing to hire
individuals with a felony background?
A: CPI offers referrals to job placement assistance
programs in the community. CPI does not keep a list
of employers willing to hire individuals with a felony.
Q: Can anyone attend the Wednesday Night Meetings?
A: At this time, the Wednesday Night Meetings
are open to CPI clients only. Referrals from partner
agencies will be considered, please contact the CPI
offices to discuss further.
Q: I am a CPI client. Can I bring my significant other
and/or children to the Wednesday Night Meetings?
A: The Wednesday Night Meetings are made up of
CPI clients only. The group is designed to be a safe
place for clients to discuss their successes and challenges
related to reentry as well as, network about employment
opportunities. In order to maintain this type of environment,
significant others and children are not permitted to
attend group.
Q: I have a friend or family member at the Travis State
Jail. How can they enroll in the TPRE Program?
A: How to become a TPRE client:
Must be a non-violent male offender, currently
at the Travis Unit in Austin, TX
Offender is returning to Travis County upon release
Offender sends an I-60 to CPI requesting an application
Offender completes the application and returns
it to CPI
The applicant will receive an acceptance letter
or non-acceptance letter two months before their release
date.
CPI program begins two months before the offenders
scheduled release date.
Q: I have a friend or family member at the Hilltop
Unit. How can they enroll themselves and their children
in the Girl Scouts Beyond Bars Program?
A: How to become a GSBB client:
Must be a female offender, currently at the Hilltop
Unit, in Gatesville, TX
Must have daughters between the ages of 5 and
17 residing in Travis County
Offender is returning to Travis County upon release
Offender sends I-60 to warden at Hilltop Unit
to request program participation
